Dread and The Bald Head
Last night was fun and very different. An sms from my production manager summond me to room 307 occupied by Craig Cozier (Tony Cozier’s son) for drinks. Seemed a good idea, a few sundowners , so to speak, and then dinner somewhere nearby.
307 is just a couple of doors down from my room so it was no surprise that I was the first to arrive. Craig (scorer and on field interviewer) was busy setting up the bar, you know, ice and beers in the basin, chairs in a circle and dragging out as many glasses that he could find. Soon Nick (graphics) arrived with two bottles of rum, chips, peanuts and some ginger ales and coke. Then there was Chris (video tape operator), Simon (director), Nick (producer), Louw (camera 2), Kate (production manager) and me.
My wife has often asked me what I can find to talk about in a pub for 6 hours and I don’t think I have ever come with an explanation other than cricket. Well last night was no different. We changed a whole bunch of laws, found all the answers to making the 50 over game more exciting in the middle overs and had a remarkable discussion about men’s underpants. All this whilst listening to the music of Dread and the Bald Head clearly audible from the stage about 10 yards away as they entertained other hotel guests who were gathered around the pool bar.
The significance of Dread and the Bald Head is that it is the name of the band that the great West Indian fast bowler, Curtley Ambrose plays with. I don’t think he is Dread but it is rumoured that he is the Bald Head. Strumming away on the guitar and standing tall at the back of the stage, it was difficult to imagine him as the destroyer of so many batting line- ups.
Needless to say, the only meal we had last night was the crisps and peanuts.
Today, breakfast was a must and then it was e-mails, pool bar, Fatty Batty (he’s graduated to a commentator now), watched with envy as my director (Simon) ran.....walked......ran.....walked .........up and down the beach four times!! This beach must be 2 km long and I really do think he deserves some kind of medal or at least a mention in the Queen’s birthday honours.
Lunch was next at the Beach Restaurant. It was very hot today and surprisingly humid with it. Many were swimming in the sea just off the restaurant and jet skiers kept us entertained. I was so tempted to plunge into the ocean but I still think that freak wave might still be out there.

looks like you and the team
Looks like you and the team are having great fun, what a life. Speaking of 6 hrs in the pub, I recall many years ago bumping into you and Trevor Quirk at a pub in Newlands just when Tim Mitchell might have played his first of few games for Western Province cricket along with wacky Kenny Jackson, you probably wont remember but 6 hrs in those days was just a 'light jog' - it got quite late i must say !
Envious from PE
Hi Jackers, Your blogs have been very entertaining but have also made many of us sitting back here in SA at work very envious. Let's hope SA win again today and here's looking forward to reading about all your antics on the blog tomorrow.
What is it about you and that damn freak wave? Can just imagine how the conversation regarding the men's underpants went!
