Pierre Joubert Blog: "It’s always nice to beat the Cobras"

I’m delighted with our Standard Bank Pro20 performance against the Cape Cobras on Sunday. It’s always nice to beat the Cobras because they’re a good side, but I think what you saw was a special individual performance from Gulam Bodi that basically won the game for us.

I thought our bowling was steady but the most important thing was Gulam’s knock. The way he was striking the ball was excellent and the Cobras bowling lineup is international class, so what he pulled off took some doing.

I’m happy with my performance, having won the Master Blaster bowling award, but I was pretty lucky as well as I remember Herschelle Gibbs missing a couple of full tosses! As a bowler I think luck plays a big part in Pro20 cricket and you need more of it than in the MTN competition. On Sunday, I was just the right guy at the right place.

To be honest, I’m more happy with the fact that we were able to complete a game, such has been the way our matches have been rained out lately.

Since last year’s Pro20, I think we’ve only had two out of 10 matches that have not been interrupted by rain, but I guess that’s to be expected with the Highveld storms.

I must also mention that Durban hasn’t been too kind when it comes to the weather, either. In the last three years we’ve played there, even in four-day cricket, I think we’ve hardly played. Perhaps they should build a roof over Kingsmead!

Our next match is on Wednesday against the Highveld Lions in Benoni. A lot of people will be saying they’re a poor side but it’s never easy when we play them because it’s our derby game.

With such a short turnaround time between Sunday and Wednesday, training will be geared towards making sure the individual feels good and is in a good space. It might not be nets, but rather individual man-management, as we also have another game this coming Sunday.

Overtraining is not a good thing and we’ve got to the stage of the season where the guys have been batting and bowling for four months. If you can’t bowl straight at this stage, you’ll never bowl straight.

Cricket is really all about the ‘feel-good factor’. If you hit 12 balls and you feel good, or if you hit 20 000 balls and you feel good, that’s up to you – and that’s the attitude we’ll have this week as we prepare for the Lions.
