Proteas Clinch Late Thriller

The second T20 International between South Africa and West Indies ended in much excitement as the Proteas won by just one run after posting a mediocre 120 for 7 in their 20 overs.

South Africa only managed to post 120 runs hitting only five 6s and four 4s with debutant David Miller being the star of the show top scoring with a very well played 33 from Just 26 deliveries. Johan Botha and de Villiers helped with their 23 and 19 runs respectively with the format doing particularly well towards the end of the innings.

Miller's innings was especially notable with the ease he settled into it. You would have never thought that this was the 20-year old's first international match as he played his shots well. I think this is a good selection for SA as it's a long term goal. It's been a while since a youngster was brought into the fold, so I believe it's a good move.

The pitch again played a huge role in today's match, as it did in yesterday's. It was incredibly scrappy and very uneven in bounce. This could possibly be seen with Smith's dismissal as one kept a little low as it hit middle stump, but it was still better than the previous day when SA managed to get 137. 120 was about 10-15 runs too little and also meant this was the lowest total of the 6 International T20s between the two sides.

Jacques Kallis and Charl Langeveldt were both left out due to "niggling injuries" as Smith put it, and this allowed Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Miller to play their first games in the Caribbean. Morne Morkel was also brought into the attack as van der Merwe was left out. 'The Kallis effect' was also felt as just his presence in the side is noticeable with Robin Jackman mentioning it in his commentary. Even though Kallis has his critics, his calming experienced effect on the team is definitely felt, and this should not be overlooked.

The bowling started exceptionally well. Gayle was out early as Steyn got him with a LBW decision and they never really got moving from then. Even to the 10 over mark, the West Indies were only going at about 3.5 runs an over. This also proved that you don't need to get off to a flying start to attack a target. They set up a good platform, with wickets in hand, that let them attack well, but stopped just 1 run short.

The bowling was very economical, as you'd expect from a low scoring game, but Styen and Morkel hit some good line and lengths, which is good preparation to the upcoming ODI series, picking up one and two wickets respectively. Botha was also great today; His batting was followed up by a well bowled 3 for 22 in his four overs earning him the man of the match award.

There was also a small altercation between Steyn and Pollard as Pollard intentionally moved in the way of a running Steyn doing a quick single. Hopefully this will setup a nice little inner competition for the rest of the tour!

It was a well fought win today, and one perhaps we shouldn't have had, but this match and series result will give the Proteas some good confidence and momentum going into the rest of the tour which is exactly what they need! Forever Proteas!
