Newlands crowd earns yet another well-deserved win
The Cobras have a lot to be grateful for. In Justin Kemp they have a flamboyant frontman who leads with both bat and ball; they have wicked bowling skills in players like Rory Kleinveldt and Vernon Philander; and they have the potential for huge scores, thanks to gutsy batsmen like Henry Davids and Andrew Puttick.
But more than anything, they have a loyal and unwavering home crowd, who seem determined to see their team win, no matter what.
Saturday was no exception. Despite a fairly dismal start to the Cobras innings (25/3 at the end of the 7th over), the crowd kept their spirits up, cheering every single run, shouting support for their favourite players, and jumping to their feet every time there was even the slightest hint of a boundary.
And they got their reward at last, in the tall and formidable shape of Justin Kemp, who brought some real energy to the game, hitting the ball all over the stadium and notching up five sixes and one four in the process.
Despite Kemp's excellent batting display, the Cobras ended on a fairly meagre 116/7, which should have meant a simple cruise to victory for the Dolphins. But the visitors just couldn't find their rhythm, and despite a steady enough start their batting line-up crumbled in the second half of the innings. A fantastic bowling display from Philander and Kleinveldt (they took 8 wickets between them!) left the Dolphins looking a little ragged, and they plodded unceremoniously towards a final score of 102 all out. David Miller was their highest scorer, with 26 runs, but it simply wasn't enough.
In true Pro20 style, it was a fairytale finish for the Newlands spectators – the final Dolphins wicket, that of Alfonso Thomas, was taken on the very last ball, thanks to the brilliant bowling of Vernon Philander.
The stars of the show were undoubtedly Justin Kemp, who scored 59 runs off just 43 balls; Vernon Philander, who took 5 wickets for just 17 runs; and the Newlands faithful, who stuck with their team even when a victory looked utterly unlikely.
