Interview with Hardy the mascot

(from the Sept 2007 edition of Sports Illustrated)

1. Hardy, thanks for your time. Off the top of your head, what's the best form of cricket?

Standard Bank Pro20 cricket - the fast and furious, action-packed, boundary bashing seam splitting kind. You think the hard hat is a co-incidence?

2. Of all the hard hats in all the world, how did you come to be chosen as Standard Bank's Pro20 mascot?

I resigned from my lowly position on a Gauteng construction site, meaning to take a gap year in search for a more meaningful career. What can I say? When I was head-hunted by Standard Bank it was a job in a million!

3. Have you ever seen a hat-trick?

Yeah, a few in my time. Seen a few rabbits pulled too.

4. Do you have any famous friends in the mascot industry?

It's a pretty competitive environment, and when you top of your game, there's not much time for socialising. Although I'm not one to name drop, I'd have to say Stan the Duck. Man he was the greatest around. Kids loved him. A legend. He went into early retirement, but I hear he's looking to make a comeback.

5. Tell us about your life outside cricket. Any hobbies?

Well, I try and stay out of the headlines.....
I've got a good head for numbers so I've been known to dabble in poker and soduko.
Still looking for Miss Right, although my mates say I'm too hardkop with the girls

6. With so many people cheering for you at matches, how do you stay humble... and how do you avoid becoming too big-headed?

I realise that the game is so much bigger than me and I try to keep my eye on the ball.

7. What's the best part about being a cricket mascot?

Ringside seats, and being a role model for hard hats the world over. Did you know that I was the first, the original 20-over Little Guy? So I try to set an example for the Twenty-Over mascots internationally, y'know, words of encouragement and advice on dress code, field etiquette, post-match presentations, where to look during the toss.

8. Who was your cricketing hero when you were a little hat?

Jonty Rhodes, who I'm very lucky to work with, as he is also part of the Standard Bank sponsorship team. What I have always admired about Jonty is that even when he took a few knocks to the head, he'd always get straight back onto his feet.

9. What's your favourite thing about Pro20 cricket?

That it has become a household family entertainment option for cricket fans. I love the fact that Cricket South Africa and Standard Bank have done such an amazing job in launching and staging the Pro20 concept that the ICC felt it appropriate to award the inaugural Twenty Over CWC to South Africa. That's a major achievement for everyone who has helped to build the Pro20 concept so successfully.

10. You seem to have a good head on your shoulders. What would you say is the best way of getting ahead in the mascot business?

It's about holding your head up high, and taking the occasional knocks with a smile.

giveaways/promos

Because I'm part of the hard working class I never get to the games in time to receive any of the promo gifts. Though I enjoy and fully support our home teams...go Warriors.
