Justin Kemp Blog: "Wasn’t a great performance"
Our Standard Bank Pro20 match on Sunday against the Nashua Titans wasn’t a great performance. We let ourselves down very poorly with the ball and our fielding was really not good.
To leak 140 runs in 12 overs and then take only one wicket was not great, so there are a few things we have to work on. But you get your bad days in Pro20 cricket and now we just have to make sure that we fix the problems in the bowing and fielding department and get it right.
The batting went pretty well and there’s no doubt that the Titans just bowled better than we did, especially at the death. They didn’t give us too many balls to hit and that was the difference.
When you’re chasing a big total like 140 somebody’s got to get in and play a big innings, but we just kept on losing wickets at the wrong times.
Herschelle Gibbs played well up front but when you’re chasing 12 an over it only takes two overs of scoring four or five and all of a sudden that rate spirals out of control. But the bottom line is that the Titans were far better than us in the field, where we were really poor.
It’s definitely not all doom and gloom but we have prided ourselves on our performances this year and it’s just hard taking a loss when you know you should have been much better on the day.
We have to be hard on ourselves if we want to be the best franchise in the country and we’re not there yet. The Titans are a good side but we have to start learning that on big days we have to be the team that’s making the running.
Our next match is this coming Saturday at Newlands, against the Dolphins, so we have a full week to get stuck in and ensure that we maintain the standards that we’ve kept for the season.
It’s certainly not panic stations – you’re going to lose games somewhere along the line – but we just have to make sure now that we don’t do it again.
