Justin Kemp Blog: "Not a Five-star performance"
It may not have been a five star performance with the bat, but we still walk away with a bonus point and a win against a Lions-team that fielded some match-winners in our Standard Bank Pro 20-series match at Newlands on Friday.
I thought we lost our way in the middle-order and if it was not for Herschelle and Richard Levi, we might have struggled a bit.
Richard hit the ball beautifully to get us to a competitive 179, but we might still have been twenty runs short.
After I lost my wicket as we slipped to 87/3, we should have taken stock and cruised a bit before the onslaught in the final seven overs.
Instead of that, we lost a stack of wickets, which set us back.
You cannot really accelerate if you suffer such a middle-order wobble.
I thought we erred in our approach and flattered to deceive.
Don’t get me wrong, in this format anyone can lose a couple of wickets in the frantic rush to accelerate, but it’s a case of losing too many wickets at the wrong time.
Luckily, Richard saved us and catapulted us to a competitive total.
We should have executed better in the middle.
Our bowling was spot on, and the Lions had to play exceptionally to hit the boundary ropes.
Neil McKenzie and Vaughn van Jaarsveld were impressive for the Lions.
There were a few lapses in the fielding, but our slow men spun it quite a bit.
We are off to Centurion for a match against the Nashua Titans. They field a superb all-round team.
It is a massive game for us. Expect more clinical execution from our middle-order in Sunday’s game.
Cheers for now
Justin Kemp
