Smashing victory from St Johns at sunny Pro20 Sunday

St Johns turned on the heat to beat St Martins today at a sizzling Standard Bank Schools Pro20 game that proved an exciting yet chilled precursor to the Bizhub Highveld Lions vs Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras game at Bidvest Wanderers today.

Only too glad about the sun's return to Gauteng skies, St John's fans turned out in somewhat visible numbers under swanky umbrellas branded in school colours. Richard Corbishley, 13 and friends loved every minute of being dunked by the dunk machine as their team smashed prolific sixes to the boundary, over and over.

Cute and stylish tweens Liza Pitteli and Cassidy Harding, Grade Sevens at St Martins, confirmed that they believed just as passionately in their team, despite them having to chase 196 runs for 4 wickets after St John's gripping innings. And the hottest cricketer on the field today, was, according to these ladies, Jason (who's surname escapes them). Hands down! - they smile - then add that Mitchell's the best player in their team.

With security as tight as it is for the most serious of matches in the Bullring, it was almost impossible to get near the schoolboy teams, but we did manage to get St John's captain Jason Newton to hop over the barrier somewhat suavely, to tell us he thinks his team did amazingly well. The highlight for him was hitting a six and breaking a chair in the stands as a result. Proud St John's parents commented on Wesley Colentianis's amazing innings of around 73 not out. They loved the vibe but encourage more fans to come out and enjoy a full day of cricket commencing with a Schools Pro20 game such as this one. It's such a great opportunity for youngsters to experience playing in a big match setting they said.

After the school's game, with less than an hour to go before the Pro20 game kicked off, the fans really started flooding in the gates and the prego rolls sizzling . A bunch of Cape Cobra supporters in Mexican hats and bikinis were super-excited and even more ampted to make sure their precious picnic basket got in the pic.

The big game got under way with two wickets down after only 2 overs. The action's still hotting up and we're rushing back to the grass embankment to check it out!
