Queens High development seven love cricket
It's a priviledge to chat to five of the seven young learners who're attending Queens High School on development cricket bursaries and clearly, dearly love the game. - I'm at another sunny, fun Standard Bank Schools Pro20 activation day at Queens High School.
From our Q&A, I realise it's no surprise that, at such a young age, they've got the focus and ambition to do whatever it takes to join the ranks of their international heroes one day and do SA proud. How awesome that they have support for their dreams.
Our field talk went as follows:
Q: Your favourite Protea cricket player?
A:Bonginkosi Van-Sterea says: AB De Villiers - he scores runs, and is the best wicket keeper and fielder.
Katlego Shimbambo says: Paul Harris - he bowls in one simple line and gets more wickets.
Siphamandla Zwane says - Jacque Kallis - he knows his stats and does his best.
Q: Which international team do you support after SA, why?
Bandile Damoyi says: England because I like the players and they're playing well at the moment.
Sipusiso Tshabalala says: India - they have one of the best fielders in the world - Sachin Tendulkar - and they're great all rounders.
Q: What life lessons does cricket teach you?
A: Katlego says:To stay out of drugs and all this bad stuff.
Bonginkosi says: It teaches you about discipline and having respect for others.
Sibusiso says: It teaches respect, patience and a lot of discipline.
Q: How did you personally come to play cricket?
A: Siphamandla says: I started playing when I was seven, I didn't know the stats but there were the best coaches in Kagiso, I was the fastest bowler and was selected for the Gauteng Regionals.
After they sing their team encouragement song, I leave the boys chatting, laughing and feeling the team connection and move on to chat to first team cricket captain Thabo Moleleki.
Q: How did Queens High do in the Schools Pro20?
A: Unfortunately we lost due to a bowl out and match conditions - I think the other team had one more wicket.
Q: What's your favourite shot?
A: A cover drive - it's the most difficult.
Q: Tell me about your coach, Mr Gxowa...
A: (Laughs with affection) ....He's to the point but also has a sense of humour - one of those unpredictable guys.
Q: Funny moments at the Schools Pro20?
A: Got to be the drop catches man!
His smile's as wide as the green stripes on his smart blazer...
We say cheerio as he dashes off to join the hundreds of vocal learners, teachers and coach Gxowa, all crowded around the Schools Pro20 activation team yelling... HOWZAT...
- It sure is a great day for cricket and learning at Queens High.
