Bell's gone, time for some Schools Pro20 vibe!

What better way to end a day of lessons at Parktown Boy's High than to spill out onto the field and join in some vibey Standard Bank Schools Pro20 cricket action? And, the best part? - Anyone can play, even the visiting St Stithians boys who are here today to play a match against Parktown's second team.

So light cricket fun, snunk in before a touch of rain, was the order of the day at this wonderfully traditional school for gentlemen, in the heart of Jozi. The activation team nabbed hundreds of red and black blazered chaps just as they were leaving the clasroom, to bowl, yell "Howzat" and show us their dance moves.

Minutes before this, I managed to chat to some of the cricket chaps about the tradition of cricket at Parktown Boys. First team coach Richard Coles says the school, "has had a strong tradition of cricket since 1923 which adds to its ethos of a holistic approach to education."

It appears the boys agree. "We field up to a C team in every age group and there are four teams in the open age group," one chap told me proudly. He and his mates believe traditions such as the first team playing in red and black striped caps and the rest playing in black caps, brings discipline and gentlemanly conduct to the school and adds to the enjoyment of the game.

Says left/pace opening bowler, Steven Mc Intyre of Form 4/Grade 11, "It's traditional for the First form boys to come watch a match every Saturday... they help cheer the team on, especially when we need 30 or so runs to win and get the vibe going."

Justin Faill, first team cricket captain, says cricket has helped him achieve many goals personally, make new friendships and strive towards something. In terms of Parktown's performance in the Schools Pro20 - they lost in the quarter finals to St Stithians, but aim to get further in the challenge next year.

After our brief chat, the chaps are keen to join in the fun that's happening at the activation vehicle, so I walk over there with them and snap some pics for our facebook albums. When the red balls, dancing girls "manning" the wickets and vibey activation leader, Kaleb come out to see who'll win prizes and turn up some tunes, these gents and loads of other cool dudes, become suddenly animated and rowdy.

It's all fun as rivalry takes a backseat and Parktown and St Stithians guys mingle and mix to see who'll win prizes. After a bit the rain starts, which doesn't dampen the fun, till it comes down harder and they run to take cover and wait for it to pass so they can get on with the upcoming game of cricket.
